Through the Kinship Caregiver program individuals who are raising a relative's child receive the support they need to strengthen their ability to raise the children in their care. You do not have to have custody of the child to receive services.
Who is Eligible?
Individuals residing in Clinton or Franklin County who are taking on the role of primary caregiver for a child whose parents are unable to assume responsibility for them. The birth parent cannot reside with you.
What type of Services does the program provide?
Information and Referral
Help with locating appropriate community resources for you and your family
Advocacy
Active support to promote your rights and help with negotiating Family Court, Dept of Social Services and the Public school system.
Support Groups
Exclusive groups for Kinship caregivers to receive encouragement, help, parenting tips, learn about community resources and make new friends.
Every Monday evening from 5:30-7 pm at Family Connections in Plattsburgh
Every Tuesday Evening from 5-6:30pm at Family Matters in Tupper Lake
Childcare and dinner provided at both sites.
Every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 10-11:30 at Family Connections in Plattsburgh. Childcare and refreshments provided.
Financial Assistance
Help with accessing public assistance grants for Kinship caregivers regardless of their income. Funds available to support a child's social/emotional growth - like extra-circular activities, summer camps and items like beds and dressers.
Respite
Once a month opportunities to get a well deserved break! (Family Connections in Plattsburgh only)
Children & Family Activities
Fun group activities designed to promote positive family and peer relationships.
Parent Education
Workshops to help you face the challenges of parenting the second time around!
Parents As Teachers ®
Monthly home visits to caregivers raising a child birth to four years of age. Receive child development information and learn to embrace your role as a child's first teacher. (Clinton Co. only).
